Over there and here

Hej.

Hi. A bit abruptly we’re now back in Sweden. This year went by so quickly and has given us so much that it’s almost hard to comprehend. My post today will reflect on our last days in Montgomery with a lot of farewells and our first days in Uppsala. No quarantine needed, but we decided to do it anyway.

"The last supper" with Marija and Sid, take-out from Chin Chin. We will miss this interesting, intelligent and fun couple!
Always nice to see them but also hard to see them go. Liz joined us as well, she was actually living with us during her last days in Montgomery. We thought it were unnecessary for her (the Swedish government) to pay for a hotel room when there’s a spare room in the house.

(null)
Off to Sidney and 14 days in quarantine at a hotel before driving to Adelaide where they live. See you soon!

My family:)

Minna is making dessert for our home made graduation dinner. We celebrated that they all done very well in school. Congratulations Nick, Liz, Minna and Siri! (null)

And even here you can find instructions to keep yourself safe.

This is how the road looks like when driving to the mountain. (null)
Wherever you travel in USA you can find these abandoned little towns. And then after the next turn a newer town appears.
(null)
In this little town they celebrated their seniors like this. I like it, it’s nice.

Barbecue and a pool party to say goodbye to the desperates. This time we brought all family members. Even though we’re all (except our Dutch friends) back in our home countries we talk to each other frequently on messenger. If we keep this up we really can be friends for life!

And then we had to say goodbye to this lovely family; Nick, Katja, Adelaide and Ingrid. We actually had our last goodbyes a couple of times both at our house and at theirs...
(null)
This is both a wonderful moment and a sad one!
(null)
So adorable, but it’s hard for a toddler to keep to the social distancing.

Bye, farewell for now, but we’ll see each other again!

The last night in the house! The sky was magical and it was so nice sitting there and talking about the year gone by.

Emptying the house. All our furniture are going to a Swedish family in Washington DC. I hope they’ll enjoy them as much as we have. Minna did a great job designing the interior of the house!
(null)
I will miss our master bedroom! It’s bigger than our living room in Sweden...
(null)
The three guys from the moving company did a good job and were very careful with our stuff. Two of them had such a southern accent that I actually had trouble understanding them, a bit embarrassing after a year in Alabama.

(null)
So empty!

Only Ellen and her family are still in the USA, enjoying the beaches!

An empty house meant some days at a hotel. We had some last things to fix, like closing our American bank accounts and returning the car tag/licenseplates, but mostly we just relaxed, did some last minutes shopping and stayed by the pool.

At the airport. Atlanta airport is one of the  busiest airports in the world, but now due to Covid 19 there’s only 10 flights a day. Felt nice and safe with no people around.
(null)

(null)
You had to wear face masks the whole way and we got some "food" in a bag before we boarded.
(null)

And then we arrived in Amsterdam, lots of people at the airport and on the plane before we finally landed in Stockholm, Arlanda. (null)
And finally we can recycle again!!!
(null)
A bit tired
(null)
Yey!!!! Here goes the plastic bottle! Recycle and reuse!

We’re home!

Poppies in the garden
(null)
And other flowers! This time of year is fantastic!
(null)

Our little lizards are back home as well. Thank you Tina, Jocke, Irma och Lea for taking such good care of them this year! They are a bit fat, what have you fed them, small dogs???

We had to go shopping after a few days. People aren’t wearing masks, no one is sanitizing the carts! We’ve been so careful for months in USA so this was a bit of a schock. We will continue to be careful, using hand sanitizer and keeping the distance to other people. In the store there were signs of how to behave, and that’s a good thing!
(null)
One at a time
(null)
Keep your distance, only 5 people at a time
(null)

(null)
5 at a time and "dots" in the floor as a reminder
(null)

Niclas sister and her family are letting us use their car until we can get our own. We actually bought a car when we were still in Montgomery. A Jeep Cherokee is waiting for us here in Uppsala. An American car, ooops!

(null)
Crazy lovely people; Tina, Jocke (behind the car) Irma and Lea

Some memories

First breakfast on Swedish soil for almost a year!
Hmm, how did that sign get here???

The evenings are a bit cold for an Alabamian
(null)
But the sky is as beautiful like it is "over there"

Sad sad things happened just before we left USA. Injustice and racism showed it’s ugly face in the worst kind of way! I really hope that USA can find a way to make a sustainable change, but before that can be a reality lots of people have to change the perspective and how they view things. Stop thinking about "I" and start thinking what’s best for everyone!
(null)
It’s time for a change!

The shopping mall in East Chase has been closed off and is now guarded by the Montgomery police! It’s obvious that the protesting has reached Montgomery.
(null)

(null)
My family!!!! Thank you for this wonderful year! I’m so grateful that we could do this together!
